Life Settlements are simply the sale of an existing life insurance policy that is unwanted or unneeded by a senior citizen to another party. The price of the policy is negotiated and sold by the owner at a discount to the face amount. The purchaser then collects the full face amount of the policy when the policy matures (death benefit).
Life settlement transactions are a true win-win.
An individual gets to sell their unwanted life insurance policy for a figure often many times the cash surrender value. In return, investors purchase these policies at a significant discount from their face value, often achieving significant double digit returns** upon maturity while having the security usually only available with treasury bills and bonds.
In the mid 90's Life Settlements went mainstream. Since that time, few other investment products have provided such unparalleled security while maintaining such a high rate of return.
Risk? Even in the great depression, life insurance companies paid on life insurance policy claims. For an added level of security, investors should purchase policies only by highly rated insurance companies. To put the risk into perspective, life settlements are considered to be about as secure as U.S. treasury bonds.
Return? Certainty of return comes from the inherent face value that life insurance holds and is guaranteed to produce upon maturation.
Taxes? Life Settlements are an IRA/401K approved investment which means that there are no tax penalties associated with transferring your funds into this low risk, high yield investment.
Because of the significant outlay of investment capital required to purchase policies upfront, Life Settlement investing has previously been the exclusive domain of wealthy investors and large companies. Billons of dollars have been invested by the likes of AIG, Morgan Stanley and GE just to mention a few.
Warren Buffett has committed billions of dollars into Life Settlement via Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary GenRe. It's been reported that his good friend Bill Gates is also heavily invested in the industry.
